Discover the Best Riads in Essaouira with my comprehensive guide to the most enchanting Moroccan guesthouses. Find my favorite stays for a magical coastal escape! Essaouira is such a hidden gem in Morocco! I had been to the country so many times before but hadn't stopped here. I finally visited last August and absolutely loved it. Unlike other places in Morocco, it doesn’t get unbearably hot in summer thanks to the Atlantic breeze—I really think it's the perfect spot to slow down and just enjoy. We spent a few super relaxing days here, staying in different hotels, trying out day passes at others, and, of course, eating amazing food (you always eat well in Morocco!). If you're looking for the best riad in Essaouira, whether you are seeking luxury, romance, or a home away from home, this guide has all my top recommendations for a cozy, authentic, and unforgettable stay in Essaouira.

*I actually loved the hand-made earthenware plates that I bought 4 and use them every day at home! Love them.

How to get to Essaouira, Morocco

By Air:

  • Essaouira-Mogador Airport: Essaouira has its own airport, Essaouira-Mogador Airport, which receives flights from several major cities in Europe and Morocco. From the airport, it's a short 20-minute taxi or shuttle ride into the city center. The airport is tiny and very cute! Last time I visited, I went with one of my closes friends and we flew Madrid-Essaouira with a direct flight, then took a private transfer to Marrakech, and then flew back to Madrid from Marrakech with Iberia Airlines,

I love small airports, they remind me of a simpler time in travel, when everything felt more relaxed and personal. No endless terminals, no massive crowds… just a calm atmosphere that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time!

If you are coming from Asia, we offer our readers 5% off on all Qatar Airways flights! This is awesome! Plus you can't miss this blog post about where to stay 1 day in Doha, Qatar, If I fly other airlines, I use this cheap flight searcher to book!

By Bus:

  • From Marrakech: Buses are a popular and affordable way to reach Essaouira. Supratours and CTM offer daily services from Marrakech to Essaouira. The journey takes about 3 hours, with comfortable seating and air conditioning. Distance Marrakech Essaouira: The distance between Marrakech and Essaouira is approximately 190 kilometers (118 miles). Traveling by car or bus typically takes around 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

  • Agadir Essaouira Bus: Traveling by bus from Agadir to Essaouira is a convenient and affordable option. Supratours and CTM are the two main bus companies offering this route, known for their comfortable and efficient services. The journey takes around 3 to 4 hours, with buses departing from Agadir's main bus station (Gare Routière) and arriving at the central bus station in Essaouira. You can book tickets online or purchase them at the bus station. To ensure a smooth trip, arrive at least 30 minutes before departure and carry snacks and water.

By Private Transfer:

  • For a more direct and private option, you can hire a Private Transfer from Marrakech. While more expensive than the bus, it offers a faster and more flexible travel experience, often taking around 2.5 hours. This is what we did, although only 1 way, Essaouira-Marrakech! We usually use this private transfers website to book, but in Morocco we can also recommend this trusted private transfer company that we used on our last trip to Morocco and it all went very well: Medtours. +212638774327 - medtoursmaroc.com.

Best eSIM Option in Essaouira, Morocco

When we visit Morocco we use this eSIM, and it is a total game-changer! Plans start from just $5, making it one of the most affordable and convenient ways to stay connected. If you’re heading to Morocco, we highly recommend this eSIM. Check it out here :)

And if you're wondering about the distance Marrakech Essaouira, it's just a scenic journey away, making it an easy addition to your Moroccan adventure.

Let's dive right into the most unique places to stay in Essaouira:

Essaouira's medina district

From 120€/night, 1-4 pax

Our favorite place to stay in Essaouira. Perfect location. Lovely decor. Very attentive staff. Great breakfast and rooftop. Nice food. 10/10 experience overall.

This former 19th century patrician residence, once serving as a storeroom for the city's Sultan who traded with the entire world from the port of Essaouira, was transformed into a charming hotel in the middle of the last century under the name Palazzo Desdemona, a tribute to Orson Welles and his film "Othello" which was shot in Essaouira. Today, it has been given a second wind to make it more comfortable and give it a new visual identity by combining the authenticity of the place with more contemporary Moroccan craftsmanship.

Located in the heart of Essaouira's enchanting medina district, Le Palazzo offers an unforgettable stay with rates starting at 120€/night for rooms accommodating 1-4 guests. This hotel is perfectly situated, within walking distance of the beach and all major attractions, making it an ideal base for exploring the city. The staff at Le Palazzo, particularly Mohammed, provided us with exceptional service and great recommendations, ensuring that we felt welcomed and well taken care of. The rooms are beautifully decorated, featuring high ceilings, comfortable beds, and elegant details from the bin baskets to the wall prints. Each room exudes a sense of luxury and comfort, perfect for relaxing after a day of sightseeing or beach.

A standout feature of Le Palazzo is the rooftop terrace. Here, guests can enjoy a delicious lunch while taking in stunning views, although it may be on the pricier side. The food is delectable, and the experience is enhanced by the incredible sunset views that we enjoyed over moroccan traditional tea. Some rooms also feature balconies, offering delightful views of the medina walls and lively summer nights, making for a perfect evening drink spot.

Overall, our stay at Le Palazzo was nothing short of a 10/10 experience. Whether savoring a meal on the rooftop or relaxing in a beautifully decorated room, every moment here was a delight. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it for an unforgettable Essaouira getaway. Thank you for having us Le Palazzo!

Renovated with care by highlighting natural materials and the latest sleek trends of Moroccan interior design, Villa beldi offers 8 bedrooms & suites dispatched in a lush garden.

At Villa Beldi, we enjoyed a Day Pass which included access to the excellent pool, a sunbed, and a towel. The food, though a bit pricey, was delicious and made for a delightful poolside dining experience. The atmosphere is pure relaxation, perfect for unwinding. We also indulged in a full body massage, which was fantastic. I highly recommend it!

Picturesque and well curated. Very good food & the hammam experience in the spa is top! Stay here if you love padel too!

Le Jardin des Douars is such a dreamy escape just 20 minutes from Essaouira’s medina. Tucked into the hills, it feels like a little oasis far from the bustle—lush gardens, gorgeous Moroccan architecture, and that peaceful, away-from-it-all vibe. I visited the hotel with friends and we loved everything: the pool area is stunning, the food was delicious (seriously, don’t skip it), and the hammam experience in the spa was beyond relaxing. Plus, if you’re into padel, they’ve got great courts too! Definitely one of the best riads in Essaouira if you don't mind being a little away from the Medina. Also great if you are traveling with a large group or with your family!

𑁍 TOP THINGS TO DO IN ESSAOUIRA:

Essaouira may be laid-back, but there's no shortage of things to do. Stroll through the charming medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where blue shutters and whitewashed walls create the perfect coastal backdrop. Visit the historic Skala de la Ville for ocean views and a glimpse of the city’s defensive past, or wander the lively port to watch fishermen bring in the catch of the day. Surfing and kitesurfing are popular thanks to the Atlantic breeze, while nearby beaches like Sidi Kaouki offer a more tranquil escape. Don’t miss the artisan shops, rooftop cafés, and the soulful vibe that makes Essaouira feel both relaxed and inspiring. Stroll the markets and try street food! I loved it and tried everything I could!
