Whether you're exploring bustling #markets, serene #temples, or navigating diverse landscapes, this comprehensive checklist will help you stay well-prepared, so you can fully immerse yourself in the wonders that India has to offer. Let's dive into the must-have items that will make your journey both comfortable and memorable.
Before diving into the list, let's cover the questions people ask us the most about organising a trip to India:
Is India a safe country to visit?
Visiting India can be safe, but like any travel destination, it depends on various factors including health, safety, and current conditions. Regarding health and safety, it is important to check the latest COVID-19 situation in India, including vaccination rates, case numbers, and travel restrictions. Ensure you are fully vaccinated and follow local health guidelines. Besides COVID-19, make sure you have other recommended vaccinations such as Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Obtaining travel insurance that covers health issues, accidents, and trip cancellations is also crucial.
When considering local conditions, keep an eye on political stability by checking for any political unrest or protests, particularly in regions you plan to visit. Official travel advisories from your government can provide up-to-date information. Be aware of the season and weather conditions as India has monsoon seasons and certain areas may be prone to flooding or cyclones. Stay informed about the places you are visiting and take standard precautions such as avoiding isolated areas at night, keeping your belongings secure, and being cautious with strangers.
Cultural sensitivity is another important aspect. Respect local customs and traditions by dressing modestly, especially in rural areas and religious sites. Understanding and respecting local etiquette can enhance your safety and overall experience.
Lastly, consider transportation carefully. Indian roads can be chaotic, and traffic rules might differ from what you're used to. Using reputable transportation services, such as licensed taxis or rideshares, can help ensure a safer journey.
When is the best time to visit India?
The best time to visit India depends on where you want to go and what you want to experience. Here's a concise guide:
Winter (October to March):
Northern and Central India: This is the most popular time to visit, with cool and pleasant weather perfect for exploring Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, and Varanasi. Rajasthan’s deserts and the Rann of Kutch are also ideal during this period.
Southern India: Enjoy mild weather in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. It's the best time for beaches, backwaters, and hill stations. Wildlife enthusiasts will also find national parks and sanctuaries more accessible.
Summer (April to June):
Hill Stations: Escape the heat by visiting hill stations like Shimla, Manali, Darjeeling, Ooty, and Munnar. These areas offer a cool retreat.
Ladakh: This is the best time to explore Ladakh's unique landscapes, with warm and dry weather perfect for trekking and biking.
Monsoon (July to September):
Western Ghats and Northeast India: The monsoon transforms these regions into lush green landscapes, ideal for visiting Goa, Kerala, Coorg, Meghalaya, and Assam. While travel can be disrupted by rain, it’s also a budget-friendly time with fewer crowds.
Special Considerations:
Festivals: Visiting during major festivals like Diwali (Oct-Nov), Holi (March), and Durga Puja (Sept-Oct) can provide deep cultural experiences.
Wildlife Viewing: The cooler months from November to February are best for spotting wildlife in national parks and sanctuaries. We visited Ranthambore National Park in December and it was beautiful!
In summary, winter is ideal for most of India, summer is great for mountain retreats, and the monsoon season offers lush landscapes and budget-friendly travel in certain regions.

Is accommodation in India cheap or very expensive?
Hotels in India offer a wide range of prices, catering to various budgets, making it possible to find both very affordable and very expensive accommodations. Here's a breakdown:
Budget Hotels:
Cheap: India has numerous budget hotels and guesthouses, especially in popular tourist destinations like Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, and Varanasi. These budget options can range from $20 to $40 per night. They offer basic amenities such as clean rooms, Wi-Fi, and sometimes breakfast. Hostels are also popular and can be very affordable, particularly for solo travelers or backpackers.
Mid-Range Hotels:
Moderately Priced: Mid-range hotels typically cost between $40 and $100 per night. These hotels usually offer more comfort and better amenities, including air conditioning, restaurant services, and sometimes swimming pools. They can be found in both urban areas and tourist destinations.
Luxury Hotels:
Expensive: India is home to some of the world's most luxurious hotels, often housed in historic palaces or resorts in stunning locations. Luxury hotel prices can range from $100 to several hundred dollars per night. These hotels offer premium amenities such as fine dining, spa services, swimming pools, and personalized services. Renowned hotel chains like Taj, Oberoi, and Leela provide exceptional luxury experiences.
Boutique and Heritage Hotels:
Varied: Boutique and heritage hotels, often located in historic buildings or unique settings, can range widely in price. Some may be relatively affordable, while others, especially those offering unique experiences or located in prime locations, can be quite expensive.
Seasonal Variations:
Prices can vary significantly based on the season. Peak tourist season (October to March) typically sees higher prices, especially in popular destinations. Off-season travel (April to September) can offer significant discounts, particularly in regions affected by monsoons or extreme heat.
Regional Differences:
Metro Cities: Cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore tend to have higher hotel prices due to higher demand and better facilities.
Tourist Hotspots: Prices in tourist hotspots like Goa, Kerala, and Rajasthan can vary widely depending on the type of accommodation and season.
Off-the-beaten-path Locations: Lesser-known destinations or smaller towns often have cheaper accommodation options.
In Summary:
So now, let me tell you the India Travel Checklist I would have wished someone had told me BEFORE going to India. HERE'S WHAT TO BRING ON YOUR FIRST TRIP TO #INDIA:
1. Eye Drops:
The vibrant sights of India can be both enchanting and overwhelming. Protect your eyes from the dryness of #contamination and irritation with a pack of natural eye drops, ensuring you don't miss a single moment of the breathtaking scenery. We forgot this in Spain and missed it! We couldn't imagine the contamination was so bad it would irritate our eyes.
2. Stomach Pills and Oral Rehydration Solutions: Sampling the diverse and delicious Indian cuisine is a highlight of any visit, but it's wise to be prepared for potential stomach upsets. Pack stomach pills and oral rehydration solution to navigate through any culinary adventures without worry on your first trip to India or if you are traveling to India with kids. (The food was delicious but we needed it!)
3. Tissues and Wet Wipes: A versatile must-have, tissues and wet wipes come in handy for anything, for example, cleaning your hands before a meal or going to the restroom, specially for women, as in general there is no toilet paper in public washrooms. Stay clean and comfortable throughout your travels. A must during our trip!
4. Paracetamol: Headaches and stomach aches can strike at any time. Be prepared to address discomfort with paracetamol, ensuring you stay in top form to fully enjoy your exploration of this incredible country.
5. Travel Probiotics: Maintain your well-being by packing travel probiotics. They provide a boost to your digestive system, helping you adapt to new foods and environmental changes more easily. We used the one below and took them before and during our trip.
6. Hydroalcoholic Hand Gel: In crowded markets, public transportation, or before indulging in local delicacies, keep your hands clean with hydroalcoholic hand gel. It's a simple yet effective way to maintain hygiene during your travels. We also brought with us hand cream as our hands felt quite dry after using the gel.
7. Cash and 100, 50 and 20 Rupee Notes: While digital transactions are increasingly common in bigger cities, having a small denomination like 100 and 50 or 20-rupee notes can be invaluable for quick and hassle-free transactions in local markets and specially for tipping. Also, you will be surprised to learn that in some big monuments like Taj Majal credit cards are still not accepted.
8. Mosquito Spray and Plug-In: India's warm climate attracts tons of mosquitoes. Guard against insect bites with a reliable mosquito spray and consider bringing a plug-in repellent for added protection, especially during evenings. We took a spray repellent, a plug-in repellent for the hotel rooms, a citronella body milk roll on and a good post-bite medicine just in case. What we used the most was the body milk roll on and the plug-in.
9. Sunscreen: Shield yourself from the intense Indian sun with a high SPF sunscreen. Whether you're exploring historical sites or relaxing on picturesque beaches in the South, protecting your skin is essential for a comfortable and healthy journey.
10. Socks (extra pair) for entering Mosques and Temples: Tourists are asked to respect local customs by taking off their shoes when visiting mosques or temples. As most places require you to remove your shoes before entering, having socks on hand ensures a more comfortable experience. I would bring the same ones specifically for these kind of visits and put them on top on the ones I was wearing that day.
Armed with these essentials and this India travel checklist, you're ready to embrace the wonders of India with confidence and immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of this incredible destination. If you think of any other items we should add to the list, please leave us a comment!
