Costa Brava Itinerary: Exploring our Favorite Coastline in Spain

Are you ready to discover Spain’s most enchanting and my favorite coastline with the perfect Costa Brava Itinerary? Dreamed of exploring a region where golden beaches meet charming seaside towns and scenic instagram-perfect countryside little villages? The Costa Brava offers this and so much more. For me, this stunning stretch of Spain holds a special place in my heart. While I’m originally from Madrid, my grandparents were from Barcelona, and we had a beachfront home in Blanes for many years. This house, now a museum called Casa Saladrigas, was where my family and I spent countless summers during my childhood. Later, our summer adventures shifted to the picturesque towns of Begur, Llafranc, and Calella de Palafrugell. Having experienced the Costa Brava’s magic firsthand for years, I know this region like the back of my hand!

In this blog post, I’ll guide you through the ultimate Costa Brava itinerary, showcasing iconic destinations like Begur, Llafranc, and Calella de Palafrugell, as well as other hidden gems. I’ll also share practical tips, a packing list, and FAQs to help you plan the perfect trip. Let’s dive in and create unforgettable memories along this enchanting coastline!

Best Time of year for this Costa Brava Itinerary

The Costa Brava is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on your preferences:

  • Spring (April to June): Mild temperatures and blooming landscapes make it ideal for exploring the countryside and towns. It’s less crowded, and the vibrant wildflowers add to the beauty.

  • Summer (July to August): Perfect for beach days, water sports, and vibrant festivals. The coast buzzes with life, and the warm waters are irresistible. Be prepared for crowds and higher accommodation prices.

  • Autumn (September to October): Quieter beaches, cooler weather, and the start of the grape harvest season make for a relaxed trip. The sea remains warm enough for swimming, and you can enjoy local festivities.

  • Winter (November to March): While some coastal towns may be quieter and certain attractions may have shorter hours, it’s a serene time to enjoy the scenery, indulge in local cuisine, and explore historic sites without the crowds.

How to get to Costa Brava in Cataluña, Spain

There are several ways to get to Costa Brava, Spain, depending on your starting point. Here are some options:

1. By Air (via Barcelona or Girona Airports)

  • Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN): The most common international gateway to Costa Brava. It's located about 1.5 to 2 hours south of the region by car or bus. From Barcelona, you can rent a car, take a train, or use a bus to reach towns like Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, and Begur.

  • Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO): A closer option, located about 30 minutes from popular Costa Brava destinations like Tossa de Mar and Lloret de Mar. This airport mainly serves low-cost airlines and is ideal for travelers flying from European cities.

2. By Train: From Barcelona, take a train from Barcelona Sants or Barcelona Passeig de Gràcia stations to various Costa Brava destinations. The journey typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the destination. There are direct trains to towns like Figueres, Platja d'Aro, and Blanes.

3. By Car: What we recommend

  • Renting a car is one of the most flexible ways to explore Costa Brava, allowing you to visit multiple towns and beaches. From Barcelona, take the C-32 highway or AP-7 to head north. The drive takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic. Renting a car is what we recommend for the perfect Costa Brava Itinerary!

5. By Taxi or Private Transfer: A taxi or private transfer is a convenient but more expensive option, especially if traveling in a group or with a lot of luggage. You can arrange this from Barcelona or Girona airports to your Costa Brava destination.
